Here are some projects and activities that fill my free time
I’ve built e-bikes for family before, but this one was for me. Based on a standard mountain bike, I added a powerful 48V brushless hub motor, custom battery mounts, and let the thing rip at over 40 mph. It’s fast, stable, and takes on rough terrain like a champ. And best of all, I get to enjoy the downhill thrill without dreading the uphill trudge. It’s my weekly joyride and my secret weapon for beating everyone to the top of the hill.
I’ve got two main drones: a DJI Mini 2 for cinematic flyovers, and a tiny homemade racing drone (aka the Frankenstein Flyer). That one started normal and slowly morphed into a 4K-capable beast thanks to a hacked-down GoPro Session and some creative soldering. It now weighs about as much as a paperclip and still records buttery-smooth footage. Every time I fly it, I expect it to explode—and sometimes it does! But when it works, it’s awesome.
Camping is great—until you realize the outdoors doesn’t come with outlets. So I built a fully independent camping station that fits in the back of a minivan. It’s got a 100Ah battery, 1500W inverter, USB ports, and lighting. Two 100W solar panels recharge the system. Oh, and yes, there’s an electric pump and sink.
A custom wood sink, electric faucet, water filtration, and a propane water heater turn this into a full-on glamping station. The faucet even doubles as a showerhead. Need hot water for cleaning dishes or pretending you’re at a spa? No problem.
Because measuring how “empty” your tank is by feel is no fun, I added an ultrasonic sensor, Arduino, and display to measure the water height and calculate both gallons and estimated shower minutes remaining. Because nothing says “connecting with nature” like a fully plumbed, solar-powered, hot-water-enabled mobile sink setup.
